The Lettuce Project I

We have had our hydroponic greenhouse for more than a year now and just can't seem to get the timing right on when to seed, plant, seed, harvest, plant, harvest, seed and plant some more. The only thing that grows fairly consistently is the basil, but I think even that could be better. So Mom and I have taken everything out except the basil and have bleached and cleaned all the trays and tops.

This my friends has taken 4 no 5 weeks so far. And we are still working on it. Who knew it would be such a big job not to mention still weekly doing Tues, & Sat markets with Wed CSA. We feel lucky if we get 1 day a week to do some washing.

Anyway we seeded our first trays of lettuce and basil back on June 3 and will plant these guys on June 17, which by the way was not the plan. Originally we want to seed on Mondays, every Monday, and plant on Mondays as they are ready. So of course the first seeding we seeded too many. We want to be able to seed 100 and plant 100 each Monday. It seems to take 2 weeks from seeding to being able to set plants in trays (in June).

You can click on the pictures to make them bigger.

It is absolutely amazing how quickly the seeds germinate. We have transplanted 108 lettuce plants. We'll see how long it takes for them to be ready for market.
